Rowi! How would you describe yourself in a few words?
Creative. Empowered. Positive Energy.
You’re an amazing content creator who thinks out of the box and doesn’t just follow trends, so we adore you for it! – Tell us where and how it all began…
I've always had this underlying creative inkling, but never knew the right way to express it - until Instagram came along. I used the platform to post what I felt; styling up outfits and jewellery and then using makeup to convey a certain vibe. As my skills developed, I was piecing together these looks inspired by my culture, drawing on my experiences and fusing it with a modern aesthetic. I started to gain a following as women all over the world were relating to my experience as a brown girl growing up in a predominantly Western society. And now I'm here!
How important is it to you to stay connected to your culture and put that out there via your style, looks and opinions?
Having lived overseas in the USA and Singapore, I experienced a sort of disconnect from my culture. Growing up in a white, privileged society half way across the world made it easy to forget my Indian heritage; my Punjabi roots. I found myself in cultural limbo, not knowing if I should take claim of being Indian, American and/or Australian. But as my Instagram kicked off and my confidence grew, I not only reconnected with my culture but it became my power. It was empowering to share this with other women of colour, and to inspire them to embrace their culture too. Creating looks with hints of my culture is my way of expressing who I am as an Australian Indian.
When the majority part of your work is based online, do you find it challenging to switch off and keep your personal life separate? How do you draw the line?
My partner Rahul really helps me to switch off! There's a lot I choose to not share on social media - there are aspects of my life, like my relationship, that I like to keep just for me. I genuinely don't find it too hard to switch off, but I do feel some pressure sometimes to capture every incredible moment and put it on social media. It's about finding a good balance and being comfortable posting whatever and whenever you feel.
You’ve built a dedicated social media following through your uniquely amazing makeup looks & tutorials. Do you have any advice for other women looking to enter into this type of industry?
It's all about consistency and persistence! It's a lot of work and dedication and you need to see through the struggle. Also just be yourself and you'll build a loyal following!
Fashion and beauty obviously plays a huge role in the work you do- aesthetics come through! But what does beauty really mean to you?
Beauty to me is about being a good person! Internal beauty is key!! The rest is simply an added benefit.
Your skin is always GLOWING, yes girl! what’s your secret?!
Laura Mercier Radiance Primer and By Terry CC Brightening Serum under my Fenty Foundation! Oh and lots of water and exercise.
Who or what in your life is inspiring you the most right now?
No one in particular! Just trying to stay self-motivated.
Do you have any big plans or goals for the year ahead?
So much in store for this year! Keen to kick my YouTube into full gear and very excited about Coachella!
Thank you for always wearing our jewels in such a stunning way! What are your Mountain and Moon ‘must-have’ pieces right now?
The Cleo Earrings and Priscillas are my absolute favourites!!
